Apr. 22nd, 2012 08:36 pm Three New Bitties! Penny, Buckaroo, and (Perfect) Tommy

(I'm a bad blogger! I need to update on Wicket and Willow, too!)

It’s definitely kitten season! I picked up these three about a week and a half ago. They were two weeks old, give or take a day or two. The tabby is the girl, and is Penny. The boys are Buckaroo and Tommy. (All three names are from Buckaro Banzai.) They spent about two hours with the wrong names: Penny, Leonard, and Sheldon. The boys simply rejected those names – they wouldn’t stick.

Jan. 12th, 2012 11:53 pm A kitten update

I have other stuff I want to write about, but I keep saying that and not doing it *sighs*

But it's not like me to not post my foster kittens! I have had adoptions, and new kittens come in, more than once, and haven't even written about them! I realized I was waiting until I had time to do the perfect post, and wasn't getting ANY post done at all! That's just silly!

So I'll start from now, and if I get so inspired, I might even go *gasp* backwards, and show other pictures from earlier. This offends my sensibilities, somewhat, but really, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter!

Current fosters are Butterfly and Bug:

Oct. 16th, 2011 11:56 pm Silly chicken update

(I have so much I want to update here, and yet here I am, doing a fluffy update. Kinda literally.)

Background:

Last week one of our hens managed to hatch two chicks. One got lost (probably a hawk) two days later (*sniff*) and a day after that, [info]cerulean_me asked around if anyone wanted three chicks - she inadvertently had 5 and only wanted 2. I said we could try them out, if they weren't too much bigger than ours, because apparently you can just slide baby chicks under a new mama and she'll just take them in as her own.

IMG_3758_crop

Introducing these new chicks to the mama, and the flock, has been a bit of a comedy.

The theory: Slide new chicks under a mama with her own chicks, while she's sleeping, and in the morning, they will all be one big family, and she'll watch out for them, like her own.
The fact: Although chickens DO go into a sort of stupor at night, mama hens are perfectly able to peck the bejesus out of your hand if you try to slide ANYTHING *near* their feathery butts while they are sitting on their babies.

The theory: New chicks will love their new mama.
The fact: If the new chicks have just spent several days being handled by people, they will be a little confused about the whole concept of "the mama."

The theory: Mama hen will consider the new chicks her own, in the morning.
The fact: This mostly worked out, actually. See above about chicks having confusion about this issue, however.

The theory: One person should be able to put the chickens to bed for the night.
The fact: It will take two people, a flashlight, and a big stick - just in case (we have an evil rooster.) One person will have to go rescue the new chicks from the corner in which they are peeping and bring them near the mama, who is NOT sleeping easily in the nest box because THREE OF HER CHICKS WON'T COME TO BED! It will take one person to VOLUNTARILY get attacked by the mama hen, by holding one of the chicks close enough to agitate her, because she MUST leave the nest box long enough for the OTHER person to (gently) fling the little guys into the nest box, BEHIND her, where she will return and triumphantly sit on them. This is necessary because if you try to fling the chicks in FRONT of her, she will peck them as if they are her own children, thinking they will realize that means "HEY! It's BEDTIME! Get under my feathers!" when instead, they will be all, "ACK! My head is being pecked! RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!" If they are behind her, she won't peck them, and they'll ALL settle down.

This was pretty much the funniest bit, by far. There is a lot of "get two in, and another comes out" before it all works out and no one is getting pecked for being out of bed, and running away.

The theory: It won't take that long for two reasonably intelligent adults to figure that out.
The fact: It took almost a half hour last night. We were quicker at it tonight.

The theory: The stupid evil rooster will stay stupefied up in his perch while we are apparently molesting his hen, and her babies, on the floor of the coop, with our backs to him and the other hens.
The fact: I love it when theory works out like that! Phew!

So, 24 hours, there are still four chicks - 3 small, and one tiny!

Jun. 26th, 2011 04:40 pm Kitten update for weeks 7 and 8!

(I have other updates, I really keep meaning to post them ... hopefully this week!)

Since I'm behind in posting, you should know that 5 of the 8 kittens have new homes (although only one, Monte) has actually gone there. If you're wanting one of these pre-sweetened truly fantastic kittens, let me know! Cowbert, Catbert, and Dennis (Kodiak) are still looking for the perfect forever home!

This is the money shot, from these two weeks. I walked in the room, saw Cowbert like this, and turned around to grab the camera and hurried back hoping he was still like this. He was. GAH GAH GAH! He's 7 weeks old in this shot.

Jun. 14th, 2011 12:05 am Kitten update!

IMG_2085

Monte wants to know why there have been no updates for almost a month!

As I write this, the big kittens are actually approaching ten weeks, and Catbert and Cowbert nine. They sure grow fast! My inlaws have been visiting, one of our chickens hatched some chicks (!!!) and the inlaw visit was preceded by some pretty comprehensive decluttering and cleaning to make room for them. (P.S. Click through to youtube and flickr to see videos and pics of the chicks if you want, before I manage to post them on LJ)

Two weeks worth of excessive cute just a click away! )

May. 17th, 2011 12:47 am HAHHAHAHA! Perfect macro!

Okay, this is one of very few macros anyone's made of my photos, and this one is by my friend [info]tamago23. I think it's hilariously brilliant, and so I'm publishing it and hoping it goes viral, for her sake ;)

Cowbert the tiny kitten meets Suki the giant dog, in Macro Land!

If you ever inclined to macro one of my photos, go for it! Please leave me a link, and preferably make sure there's obvious credit of where the photo came from if you post it somewhere, but I love stuff like this, so feel free!

May. 14th, 2011 09:16 pm Dick Van Patten was right - Eight is Enough! But boy are they cute :)

Okay first, shame on me for not updating in so long! As some folks probably know, I had a couple of scares with a few of the kitties - the worst being a couple of seizures with Aurora and Nanuk. Aurora just had the one, and Nanuk had one mild, and one not-so-mild. They're both totally fine now, and apparently kittens will often just outgrow it, but it sure was distracting for a bit and the blog fell quiet in the meantime. Also, feeding 8 bottle-babies is totally overwhelming, especially when/if anyone goes off their feed, etc.

IMG_2082

The really great news is that everyone is doing GREAT now :) So I think you're all due for some massive cute! I'm going to break this into a couple of posts or I'll just completely kill the internet trying to catch up two and a half weeks in one go!

21 Days Old
At 21 days old, I still had just the 6 kittens. The "bag kittens," Monte, Minnie, and Claire, and the "Great White North kittens," Nanuk, Kodiak, and Aurora. Little Kodiak, aka Fatty McFatterson, shows his plump belly!

Apr. 29th, 2011 12:50 am Yeah, I'm a sucker. Meet Catbert and Cowbert.

Just ... shutup.

I know, I know, I was totally full already! Six kittens is FULL!

But my next door neighbor, whom I adore, called from work and one of her employees, or her employee's daughter, or the former babysitter of her kids (not sure, but I think it's the latter two, and they are the same person) had this dropped off on her front doorstep:

Apr. 25th, 2011 10:43 am Kittens, and then more kittens, and then, yes, more kittens!

Show of hands - who is unsurprised that my babysitting gig turned into fostering? ;) It really WAS going to be babysitting, but Anje and I talked it over, and since I had gotten the hard latchers to latch, and she knew she'd be getting more kittens in soon, she asked if I wanted to keep them, leaving her open for new ones. So, yeah.

So please meet my official foster kittens (fostered through Anje, and Bitten By a Kitten Rescue):

Kodiak, Nanuk, and Aurora

Apr. 19th, 2011 11:23 pm Did I mention, it's KITTEN SEASON???

Well, well, well ... we interrupt your regularly scheduled updates on Monte, Claire, and Minnie to bring you ... MORE KITTENS!!!

IMG_1487

Okay, to be fair, I've only got these three for about 24 hours - I'm babysitting. Er, kittensitting them. My new rescue friend, Anje, went and picked up these babies from the San Jose shelter last night, and the two little ones (the masked tabby and the tortie, but mostly the tabbie) are VERY stubborn about latching onto the bottle. She had afternoon and evening plans and it was going to be a real ordeal to bring them along, so of course I said I'd take them.
